Learning how to make new friends is important for your child’s growth. It will teach him how to socialize which is vital in his growth and development.
Why is my child having difficulty making friends?
If your child shies away when there are visitors at home, he may have difficulty making new friends. This often happens when a child is not used to having people around. If they are only used to having their parents and siblings around, it will be difficult for them to befriend or trust others.
It can also be caused by the types of available toys right now. If your child prefers playing with his computer or staying at home to watch educational programs all day long, he won’t have the chance to meet other kids. Some parents would give their childrens outdoor toys. But even if your child plays outside of the house, if he is just playing by himself he wouldn’t be able to make new friends.
How can I help my child make new friends?
- You can help your child make new friends by introducing him to children his age. You can ask some of your neighbors if they have children. If they don’t, you can look for social groups for kids at your local paper and enroll him.
- You can also bring him to the park. You will surely find kids there. You can even bring some of his kids outdoor toys to entice other children to approach your child.
- You can also encourage him to say hi to some of the kids in the park. Other children are possibly shy to talk to your child too.
- If he meets new kids in your neighborhood, you can invite them during the weekend to play. Before you know it, your child has found new friends.
- If your child is still hesitant to talk to other children, reassure him that it is alright. You can teach him how to talk to others by portraying it at home. Pretend that you are a child who wants to get to know another child. You can show him how to say hi and ask for the other child’s name. You can show the other child some outdoor toys and invite him to play with you.
